If you are reading this you survived 2020, which reminded us of the dangers of adventuring on a mid TL, balkanized world during a global pandemic. Red Zone classifications exist for your safety and the safety of others. Here's hoping for critical success rolls to those with Science, Medical, and Leader skills so the IISS can lift the interdiction. I've got a starship mortgage to pay and you can't jump when travel is restricted. When this is all over let's meet at a seedy startown bar, divvy up our treasure and plan our next adventure.

The events of 2020 had a detrimental impact on the amount of blogging and content creating I was able to do. Hardly worth mentioning in a year racked by COVID-19, economic upheaval, social and racial unrest, the impacts of climate change, and political shenanigans. In an act of defiance and hope I spent Holiday (yesterday) commemorating the founding of the Third Imperium and drawing spaceships. A small act, meaningless in the big picture, but the blog is still here and more content will come.

The Boring Blog Stats:
Total page views: 333,724 as of today. Wow. That's a third of a million! Average monthly page views for 2020 jumped from just over 5,000 to over 7,000. Were you guys stuck indoors most of the year or what?
Not surprisingly, the most viewed posts continue to be the Starship Geomorphs books and the starship deck plans.
The primary source of traffic to the blog continues to be Google, with Reddit beating out Facebook for the first time for the #2 slot.
Visitors to the blog continue to come from all over the world, with the United States, the U.K., and Canada leading the charge. Oddly, Turkmenistan made its first appearance on the list, edging out "Other" for the #9 slot. So greetings to my new Turkmenistani friends! Sorry to hear about all the ethnic discrimination, religious zealotry, police brutality, and political corruption in your country. I'm glad I don't live in a place like that.

Highlights of the Year:
The release of the Starship Geomorphs 2.0 PDF was kind of nice and I appreciate the enthusiastic response from so many people. In particular I want to thank Shawn Driscoll for his YouTube shout out and Jeff Koenig and Bob Loftin of SAFCOcast.com for their mention in Episode18. Your kind words help keep me motivated guys, so thanks.

In related news, a print version is coming (really!). Marc Miller did a test print of the pre-final version and I received this email from him in October: "I made a hardcover of your book. It looks beautiful." I just need to make a few minor tweaks for it to be ready for the the pubic. Soon.

I really enjoyed seeing the Traveller community come together virtually. For a hobby that was built around tabletop social interaction, it was great to see so many work together to make virtual tabletop gaming more commonplace. I'm also grateful for all those who took the time to convert my geomorphs into other graphic formats to make them more accessible to the virtual gamers. Thanks again, everyone.

In May I participated in the Traveller Charity Stream in Support of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, put on by Patrick Kanouse and hosted by David from High Shelf Gaming and Hugo from The Death Die Club. They ran the Classic Traveller adventure A Murder On Arcturus Station. It was a great event and fun to get involved with others in our community to do something charitable, not to mention an awesome way to celebrate May Day! Great job, guys! I'd love to see something like this become a regular May Day event.

Lowlights of the Year:
Let's give this one a miss this year, shall we?

What's in store for 2021 (and beyond)?
It's sad that I could basically copy/paste my response from the 2019 State of the Blog. Too many ideas for Traveller content and just not enough time to do them. I'd like to make a commitment to finish existing projects before starting new ones, but as many of you know, when the creativity bug bites you have to scratch that itch, and Traveller has a way of inspiring creativity.

Best of luck for a safe and prosperous 2021. took on the Herculean task of erasing out the standard square grid and
creating PNG images with transparency. This is great news for those of
you who want to use these with VTTs and variable grid styles or
GURPS players who specifically want a hex grid.

Additionally,
Eric made quite a few of his own custom geomorphs and customized a lot
of the bridges from the Starship Symbols book. He also took the time to
create multiple color versions of many of the vehicles, so those of you
looking to run your Traveller-Car Wars crossover now have dozens of tokens
to choose from. Not enough for you? He also created a couple starship
layouts and several floor plans for an apartment complex and then
converted my starship deck plan collection into grid-less PNGs as
well... and also Photoshop PSD files for those who want to get creative
and make your own variants.

Seriously... my head is spinning from the amount of work that he has done and made available.

I
highly encourage you to check out his blog post and read about his
process and tips for assembling geomorphs using Paint.Net, a Photoshop
plugin for Paint.Net, and TR's PseudoSnap! plugin to help align the
geomorphs to a grid.

>> CLICK HERE TO GO TO ERIC'S GEOMORPH BLOG PAGE WITH 7-ZIP FILES <<

For you GURPS players, Eric also has another page filled with all kinds of GURPY goodness.

>> CLICK HERE TO GO TO ERIC'S GURPS PAGE <<

If
you are not a 7-Zip user I've added a link to standard .ZIP files of
Eric's work. Be advised these are mostly high resolution images and
there are several thousand of them.

>> CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD ERIC'S WORK IN STANDARD .ZIP FORMAT <<

Thanks
again to Eric and the others mentioned in the previous post who have spent the time
converting the geomorphs and symbols into a more usable format and
making them available to their fellow Travellers. I'd tip my psi shield
helmet to you but you know those damn Zhodani are everywhere.
Robert Pearcehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18082305855923112645noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5459293513569472778.post-28041079178492157642020-08-18T00:20:00.007-07:002020-08-27T22:38:56.357-07:00More Images!

This is a follow up to my post from last June regarding Starship Geomorph images.
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD STARSHIP GEOMORPHS 2.0.

The biggest change is the addition of two new types of geomorphs, Ends and Aerofins, which will help make your geomorphs layouts have a more streamlined, sci fi aesthetic.

The new book features...
Over 50 new pages, fully bookmarked and hyperlinked!
Over 80 new geomorphs and geomorph accessories!
Over 1 new illustrations!
Very slightly modified cover!
Same low price!
... and who knows how many little anal-retentive tweaks! For the meticulously curious, my marked up copy of version 1.1 changes can be found >>[HERE]<<.

I will be working with Marc Miller to produce a Print On Demand version. It is my hope that over the next couple weeks the Traveller community will review this version for spelling, grammatical, and graphic errors and give me feedback so that any corrections can be made before before the print version becomes available.

Coincidentally, the original geomorphs blog entry from October 2018 just passed 20,000 page views last week. I have no idea how many actual downloads that might be, but I'm delighted the community has shown enthusiasm for this work. Stay safe and Happy Travelling!

It's been almost three years since I uploaded my Traveller Referee Emulator Excel spreadsheet. I add to it from time to time when something new catches my eye and I feel it would be beneficial. It's still organized chaos in the front and a hot mess in the back, drifting into entropy as the years tick by. But if you've enjoyed using this in the past - or have never seen it before - here it is in its most recent glory.

It should work for versions of Excel 2013 and newer and is geared toward generic Traveller or other sci-fi RPGs, and would have some utility for RPGs in general. There's a lot of stuff packed in it.

A list of all revisions since the last release can be found on the Table of Contents tab.

This Story Cubes box can be found in the lower right hand corner of the overall spreadsheet. In addition to adding my interpretation of all the story cubes I could find I've added a couple of my own Traveller story dice sets as well as a generic sci-fi story cube set. The gray boxes are pull down menus to access the various cube sets. You can also set them to Random if you like, but it can get kind of weird when you start getting Batman villains and dinosaurs.

These can be used to stir your imagination, like any story cubes. I tend to look at them as a group of nine, like the ones shown above. Alternatively I may just look at the first line from each group I've selected.

Since the PDFs are printed directly from AutoCAD, there are no intermediate images. This question and discussions around the topic have ramped up recently - I'm assuming due to the pandemic and the increased use of online virtual table tops (VTTs). I don't use VTTs myself since I am more of a solo gamer, but I've always loved tools that helped people be more creative and I haven't met a frazzled GM yet who didn't appreciate a good time saving tool. Online gaming is a great way to maintain social distancing and game with people around the globe. With that in mind I want to introduce a few people of the Traveller community I've been interacting with lately and link to the Starship Geormorph files they've been generous enough to share that they've created as part of their VTT gaming.

I highlighted David Gillespie of High Shelf Gaming last July, after catching his "Yacht My Problem" Traveller campaign on YouTube. David uses Roll20 as his VTT. He used Photoshop to convert the geomorph book into .PNG files of each page. He then created his "Titan" deck plan from those. David has been kind enough to provide us a link to the assets for his game, which includes the aforementioned geomorph sheets, a variety of deck plans, and vehicle tokens. He's also included an .MP3 file of some ominous music he used for when the players entered the ship.

David's "Yacht My Problem" game assets can be found here.

Nicole Beach of Cheese Weasel Logistics is using the geomorphs with the Fantasy Grounds VTT. She has created a Traveller geomorph mod for that system which she has shared on the Traveller RPG House Rules Facebook page. The mod can also be found here. Nicole trimmed the geomorphs to the outside of the wall and included a variety of vehicles and ships from the book. A ZIP file with her collection can be found here. Nicole also has plans to release a Traveller game and official Droyne Coyns.

Manfred Pade uses Tabletop Simulator as his VTT. He used GIMP - a free photo imaging software - to create individual geomorph .JPG files. He then converted those files to Tabletop Simulator objects that can be used within the game. The Sci-Fi RPG Starship Geomorph Map Tiles module can be found here. Manfred trimmed all 400 of the Standard, Edge, and Corner geomorphs down the centerline of the wall for easy placement. The geomorph image files he created can be found here. A video example of using the tiles on Tabletop Simulator can be found here.

Although when I created the Starship Geomorphs book I did not have VTTs in mind, I am really grateful for David, Nicole, and Manfred for taking the time to create the files from my book and be willing to share them. The whole purpose of creating this blog was to share some of my work with the Traveller community, so their efforts are appreciated in helping me with that goal

If you would like to create your own modules for other VTTs feel free and let me know so I can share your work. My only requirement is that anything you create based on my work remains free (even if the VTT costs to use it). Credit and/or a link to this blog is also appreciated.

Note that all the images and mods referred to above are based on version 1.1 of the Starship Geomorphs book and many of the images have been tweaked, majorly modified, or renumbered for the upcoming 2.0 book. I can easily create full page image files of the book like David did, but to create trimmed images like Manfred's takes considerable more effort. Hopefully someone from the community will step forward to put in that effort if the community feels having those extra files would be beneficial.

There was some discussion on one of the Traveller Facebook pages about some of its layout peculiarities. So here is my take on the ship, based on Classic Traveller Book 2 rules (excluding the drop tanks).

For the most part I just switched out the original plan's massive ship's locker and wasteful circulation for two very small staterooms and a common area with galley, and relocated the controversially placed port turret to the top of the ship. Finally, I changed the lines of the ship just a bit as I'm not fond of overly "pointy" ships (Vargr designs excluded of course). Still, this keeps the general appearance of the original plans.

This is my first deck plan with drop tanks. I never really cared for the idea of having to rely on a starport to have tanks available and it possibly could curtail visits to more interesting frontier worlds. I included fuel scoops, processors, and and extra 10 dtons of fuel so that in the event no drop tanks are available, the ship can still function as Jump 1 starship. Book 3: Scouts suggests variants are available, so I included an Advance Scout option and another for a robotic crew.
A few people had asked me if I was going to create something more apropos to our new reality so I made a few changes and I now offer the Medical Isolation Ward geomorph. Science fiction and horror have a long history of viral/medical focused stories. If you are looking for adventure hooks beyond today's headlines you might also consider stories and films such as Alien/Aliens, the Resident Evil series, the first few minutes of 28 Days Later (isolation beds can be re-imagined as isolation cages for animals), the film version of I am Legend, and the Stu Redman storyline in Stephen King's The Stand.

By presenting this I am in no way trying to make light of the situation we are all facing nor exploit it or facilitate any fear mongering. I think role playing games are an excellent way to spend time while we practice social distancing and my hat is off to those of the gaming community who are exploring online options like Roll20 to keep the hobby going.

Stay safe. Be educated. Wash your hands, paws, tentacles, or graspers as is appropriate for your species.
The book will include a new section of 60 End Geomorphs, 6 new Standard Geomorphs, a few new Specialty Geomorphs, and a couple new illustrations. I've also made tweaks to some of the original geomorphs. Once again, the PDF will be made freely available, with a separate PDF available for Print on Demand.

Work still to be completed includes:
- Design and draw 8 more End Geomorphs
- Design and draw 5 more Standard Geomorphs
- Complete 2 or 3 new illustrations. Models for 2 of the illustrations are already about 90% complete.
- Another pass at editing. There's always something...
- Creation of the final PDFs (one for print and one for computer use)

If you have any ideas for the remaining 13 geomorphs, now would be a good time to make your suggestions known. I feel I'm starting to hit a creative wall for new ideas and it is slowing me down. If you'd like to make a suggestion, add it to the comments below or email me at pearcedesignstudio@gmail.com. Remember that geomorphs are not just for starships, but can be used for space stations and ground facilities as well. There's no guarantee that I'll use your idea, but I'll certainly consider it.

Finally, here's another End Geomorph to whet your appetite, an Xboat docking area. Enjoy!
Just received my copy of Xboat Special Supplement #1: Contact! as part of Rob Eaglestone's Kickstarter fanzine project. It's a good mix of classic Traveller races and some lesser knowns. Races include the Amindii, Aslan, Bwap, Clothian, Droyne, Hiver, K'kree, Llellewyloly, Robots, Shrieker, and Vargr. Very cool wraparound cover and amazing interior artwork by Tim Osborne. Great job, guys!Robert Pearcehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18082305855923112645noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5459293513569472778.post-76744409869213645172019-11-25T17:41:00.000-08:002019-11-26T12:16:54.607-08:00Xboat Fanzine Issue #2

11/26/2019 UPDATE: I just discovered this morning that Rob had sent out just a few copies of Issue #2 as a mail test. I'm not sure how I missed this one, from GaryCon last March, but since it currently only has 25 views I'm guessing a lot of you haven't seen it either. It is well worth watching in my opinion. Big thanks to Luke Gygax for posting this to YouTube. Here's a link to help boost the signal: GCXI Panel: Traveller.

In the interview, there is some discussion about a print version of the Starship Geomorphs book. This is something I still very much want to do and am working toward that goal, but I currently have a lot of Traveller irons in the fire and no more spare time than usual. I am in the process of creating a new section for the book called End Geomorphs. These are geomorphs that are designed to connect to only one other geomorph. I'm not sure yet how many of the new geomorphs I will create, but I expect the final print version will be between 200 and 220 pages, including new artwork. December is generally a slow month for me, so hopefully this will be complete and ready to print in early 2020.

Here is an example of an End geomorph, a bridge for a large scale ship with stations based loosely on the Azhanti High Lightning:
I received my hardbound Traveller 5 set today - 5 days ahead of schedule and everything in great shape! I don't know why, but there's something about holding a physical copy of a book that is so much more fulfilling than reading a PDF from a tablet
Sorry guys, "Debbie Does Dalos" didn't make the list. What's playing at your starport megaplex?

I just received this in the mail. Congratulations to Robert Eaglestone for his successful Kickstarter campaign. It's always great to see new Traveller products being developed to keep the game not just alive, but thriving. I'm honored to have been a part. Ian Stead's cover art blows my socks off and I can't stop looking at it.

For those who didn't fund the Kickstarter and are interested in purchasing issues, I'd suggest to keep your eyes on the Traveller Facebook groups for more info. I think Rob's got his hands full right now making sure all the orders get processed. I'll post an update here when I find out what his plans are.

As one of the contributing artists, and having had access to the texts for months, I think I'm too close to the project to provide any kind of review. I'm curious to hear what the people new to the fanzine have to say. I do have one minor complaint, which I've already read echoed by other Kickstarter contributors - the 'zine came in the mail just as it is shown, so there was a small bit of damage that occurred during delivery. A couple crunched corners and a few bent pages inside. Nothing to cry over, but not pristine. Maybe some kind of mailer can be used for the next issue.

To all the supporters, I hope you enjoy this addition to your library. Happy Travelling, everyone!

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to High Shelf Gaming for their "Yacht My Problem" Traveller campaign. David Gillespie is using Roll20 to bring his group together virtually. Gaming sessions are live streamed and posted on YouTube.

Watching others play is an entertaining way to see different gamer and referee play styles. Session 3, just released yesterday, was a good reminder of just how deadly Traveller play can be and how quickly things can go bad. The scene where the characters had to move their recently deceased comrade from one ship to another while flying through space was a particular nail-biter - and yet still hilarious in many ways. I also enjoyed seeing the bounty hunter variant of my Hammer Class starship and some Starship Geomorphs used in actual gameplay. Always happy to see my work being put to good use.
Just wanted to pass on the news that Robert Eaglestone has just launched a Kickstarter for a new Traveller fanzine. Ian Stead and I will be providing the artwork. Although the content will not be canon, it does have the support of Marc Miller. Executive Summary:
The blog is still kicking, but I'd like to post more frequently. With the Starship Geomorphs book complete I'm looking to provide more varied, but smaller, content in 2019.

The Boring Blog Stats:
Total page views: 192,214 since my initial blog post just over three years ago. My average page views per month these days is just over 5,000.
Most viewed posts: Starship Geomorphs book, Destiny Class 200 ton Yacht, and the 15mm deck plan collection.
Audience: Visitors come from all over the world, but primarily from the United States and the U.K., as would be expected. Primary traffic sources continue to be Google and Facebook.

Highlights of the Year
Getting the Starship Geomorphs PDF book wrapped up and released. I was amazed how quickly it took off and spread around the various social media sites and game forums. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and enthusiasm.
Related highlights:

Marc Miller promoting the book and working with me to create a printed version, instead of slapping me with a copyright lawsuit. Thanks Marc!

Receiving an award from the good folks at The Zhodani Base for Best Free or Pay What You Want Traveller Product. I appreciate the recognition and now can technically call myself an award winning author. Mwah ha ha.

Blog pageviews shot up to over 18,000 for October 2018, more than triple my normal monthly average. Starship Geomorphs surpassed my previously most viewed page (the Destiny Class Yacht) in only three days!

The release of Horizon Games' Traveller Customizable Card Game, and the inclusion of some of my artwork. I just wish I had time to play it.

Lowlights of the Year

The inclusion of my artwork in the aforementioned Traveller Customizable Card Game. I'm not trying to be overly humble here, but the quality of my artwork just does not stand up with the rest included in the game. It's a little embarrassing. There is a lot of great artwork there. I want to put a bug in Jeff Yin's ear about doing a Kickstarter to produce a coffee table book of some of the artwork.

Not enough time for this blog. While I'm enjoying the strong economy and
the building developer client I am working with, it would be nice to
have a few days off. The two weeks I was hoping for around the holidays
turned into just two days. I'm really envying those Travellers out there
who've mustered out and are living off their fat pensions. That's how it works, right?

Not making the time to play my solo Traveller campaign. Do you ever imagine what your PCs are up to when you are not playing? Mine have been sitting in a cave for over a year now.

What's in store for 2019 (and beyond)?
In reality, probably mostly a lot of my day job and excuses on my blog for not posting more. Ideally I'd like to post something of quality at least once a month. Some upcoming content may include:

A print version of the Starship Geomorph book - I was finally able to get some revised test print files to Marc Miller, who is looking to set up Print On Demand printing through Drive Thru RPG. More information should be coming soon.

The Starship Symbols & Spaces book - kind of a sister project to the Starship Geomorphs book. It will include a wide variety of starship rooms and component parts as both a PDF file and DWG/DXF formats. Nearly complete.

Traveller themed starship symbols for Cosmographer - I spoke with ProFantasy Software - the makers of Campaign Cartographer and Cosmographer - and they created some starship content inspired by my geomorphs, but with their own unique look. Ideally I'll find time to learn the software and be able to convert my starship symbols and spaces into usable components for Cosmographer. Alternately, this might be something that could be crowd sourced by the Cosmographer community using my starship symbols files.

An Easter Egg post - probably in April - showcasing a bunch of the unusual things I've included in my illustrations many readers may not have been aware of.

I've got a ton of incomplete projects I want to get finished, and am hoping I can discipline myself to finish those before starting the other ton of projects still in my head.

Interior illustrations of the Kugashin/Lavalier Class Laboratory Ship. I've already got it about 75% modeled. I don't think I've seen any interior illustrations of this ship.

600 ton "adventurer" ship - a collaborative effort I started with a blog viewer. I put this on the back burner because I felt the geomorph book was so close to completion and would be of interest to more people.

A robotic armed work pod vehicle, inspired by a recent discussion on one of the Traveller Facebook pages.

There are a few bigger projects I'd like to do, but these may be a while coming unless my work schedule frees up:

I'd love to do another 30 day blog challenge. It's a great way to create a lot of content in a relatively short period of time, and really gets the creative juices flowing. Unfortunately, the type of content I want to create takes more hours a day than I have available. I've got tons of deck plans, robots, and other designs in my sketchbooks and binders. A 30 day challenge is not too likely to happen in 2019, but I like to keep it on my list.

I'm getting antsy to design a downport, or better, something like my own version of Fifty Starbases that Judges Guild put out.

I've also been considering doing something like A Naval Architect's Guide to <blank> series, starting with Staterooms, showing various room types, layouts, and fittings. I've got a lot of this type of stuff drawn or modeled already, I just need to clean it up and get it out there.

Thanks to everyone for your support and feedback. Happy Travelling!
The Starship Geomorph book has been updated with the following changes:

Miscellaneous spelling and grammar problems. Thanks to Ian Kinney for helping with the proofreading and editing.

A few graphic modifications, shading and linework tweaks. Hardcopies printed for miniature use should look better.

Fixed a couple of low resolution illustration issues.

A good number of geomorphs were tweaked - something I can't stop doing for some reason. Nothing major. There are fewer staterooms without private freshers. The image of crew members roaming the ship wrapped in a towel looking for a shower was getting to me.

I was able to bring editable layers into the PDF but for some reason it was bringing down the graphic quality of just about everything, so I opted to leave out that feature until such time as I can do so without sacrificing quality elsewhere. My apologies to those who were hoping to have hex grids this round.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and encouragement. I hope you enjoy this cleaned up version.
It's great to see so many responses to the Starship Geomorphs book. Thanks to everyone for their positive feedback and constructive criticisms. I will be re-releasing the Starship Geomorphs PDF in a week or so with corrected spelling (What? You've never heard of Marshal Arts?) and grammar, a few graphic and miscellaneous tweaks to some geomorphs, and the ability to turn on/off individual drawing layers including a second optional hex grid. This will allow you to do things like select square grid, hex grid, or no grid at all, turn off text for player maps, and turn off shading for less ink usage when printing.

Additionally, Marc Miller and I have started talking about making a print version available to those who want it. There are no specifics yet as I want to get the edited PDF version off my plate first. I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

Finally, I'm also working on a starship "symbols" PDF book that would be a collection of individual rooms and room blocks for those who want to lay out ship plans that way. The book will probably include supplemental .DWG and .DXF files.
