I'm introducing a new feature to the Yet Another Traveller Blog: The Refit Yard.
From time to time I will be taking previously published classic Traveller starships and giving them an overhaul; updating specifications to Mongoose Traveller High Guard rules, updating deck plan graphics to my preferred style, fixing perceived deck plan irregularities, proposing ship variants, and creating new illustrations (as time allows). My intent is to keep the flavor of the original ship as much as possible, just refit them for the 21st century. I also hope to introduce players to older, less accessible ships they may not have encountered before.
The first ship is the Florian Provincial Merchant, from the pages of The Third Imperium magazine, Issue #8. Scans of this magazine are available through Marc Miller's Far Future Enterprises website, in the Apocrypha-2 collection.

That is one ugly as sin ship, but very different and cool none the less. I am hoping that we will see many more old designs from the early days of Traveller make their re-appearance here in the Retrofit Yard!
ReplyDeleteWhile it is undeniably a flying brick, it’s a really cool one, like a compact travelling mall.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of these vessels being used by wandering merchants, drifting from system to system, touching down and opening their doors for weeks of trade. For a while, the ship becomes a local hub of activity, and then just as quietly it closes up and moves on. You could even imagine people renting out staterooms to set up small shops inside, travelling with the mall from location to location, only to return months later with entirely new goods and stories in its hold.
